Should Schools Provide Moral Education for Youth?

Moral education is enlightening and educating about which behaviors and values are good and acceptable. Since it has a great impact on people's characteristic features, they should be educated at an early age. Therefore, children require education and guidance so that they can learn how to behave while coping with the world. In my view, schools should provide moral education for youth, providing them with a feeling of decency and lawfulness, and instruction in value should not be left just to parents because students are mostly shaped and ripened by teachers.

First of all, schools, universities, academies and similar institutions are training facilities that shape and make think the human factor, and make them useful to themselves, their family and their homeland. Schools try hard to educate them on ethical theories so that they can make morally right decisions. Morality overspreads every aspect of their lives. For instance, if a student arriving late to class tells the truth to the teacher while specifying his or her justification, this is a moral behavior. On the other hand, if what is good or bad is not taught to students in schools, it reveals a deficiency in education and teachers have difficulties in implementing their plans.

Even though one of the most important goals for many parents is to teach their children good morals, they may fail to reach to their goals. A major problem at this point is that they do not act out according to the ethical principles of right and wrong whereas emphasizing the importance of ethics. Hence, morality becomes a word that has no meaning. There are some rules established by parents like "Be good to others" or "Always tell the truth". However, most of the time, they do not explain their children why those moral rules are important.

In spite of the fact that every family has certain moral rules, they may not be enough and accurate for their children. Since education given at school reflects common aspects of all families in society, it becomes a more valid moral education. Besides, support of the school helps to resolve disagreements between families and individuals. Teachers have a greater impact on students; therefore, youth becomes much more conscious thanks to the education in school.

Finally, we used to respect our elders, parents and teachers with love and politeness. However, the youth of today have less discipline and right attitude. Although moral education begins basically in the family and continues in school, while raising their children, unfortunately some parents do not educate them attentively. Thus, instruction in value should not be limited just in the family. Moral education should become mandatory in all schools. By this means, moral values will help youth to form their personalities and it will provide to be grown up altruistic individuals.
